AVS S4 4 Star Car Alarm Product Review

A step ahead at the 4 Star car alarm level

The 4 Star car alarm market is one of the most crowded with all of the major brands offering at least one model at this mid-level price point. We’ve looked at few so far such as the AVS A4 and Dynatron D7600 but how about the AVS S4?

The AVS S4 is one of the less well known of the AVS car security models and it sits at the upper end of the pricing scale with an RRP of $549. However at one level below our biggest selling alarm (the AVS S5) you’d expect it to offer us some good features and it doesn’t disappoint.

Being part of the top of the line AVS S-Series range the AVS S4 includes triple immobilisers meaning where possible fuel, ignition and crank are all disabled. Basically the more immobiliser circuits the harder and longer it takes to bypass the alarm so the importance of having that third immobiliser option is not to be undervalued.

The AVS S4 also includes an intelligent dual stage shock sensor. A shock sensor is designed to pick up an impact to the body of the car. Thieves will often whack the vehicle or rock it to see if anything happens and that’s where a dual stage sensor is a bonus. A dual stage shock will give a warning on a light impact and a full alarm trigger on a heavy impact. So in this example it would give the thief a series of warning chirps which alerts him that the car does have an alarm. This will hopefully make him decide to move on and try the next car in the parking lot instead.

One of the downsides with standard shock sensors is that if they are set too sensitively they can false trigger – a car alarm going off every time a car with a loud exhaust or a truck drives past has got to be right up there on the top ten list of things that drive me nuts. So the thing with the AVS S4 intelligent shock sensor is it can auto-adjust. If the sensor detects the car is in a noisy environment, such as being parked on a main road, it will automatically reduce its sensitivity for that arming cycle. This drastically reduces false triggers and the annoyance factor! And it works – we’ve had cars parked outside our showroom on the busy Railway Ave, some with AVS S4/S5 alarms and some with other alarms, and the false trigger ratio is much lower with AVS systems.

And being an AVS alarm it has all the features we’ve come to expect as standard from the AVS stable – waterproof remotes (or the option to use your car’s factory remote), seamless turbo timer integration (no chip upgrades, extra parts or clunky install changes required), a data battery back-up siren and door/bonnet/boot protection. Each of these features on their own can take up a whole page (in fact you can read about them in some of our earlier blogs) and they do make a big difference to how well the alarm functions for you.

One last point on the AVS S4 is that it can be easily upgraded at a later date to the AVS S5 5 Star alarm which is an often overlooked bonus. The AVS S4 alarm is Australian/New Zealand Standards Certified with a 4 Star rating (see our 4 Star Car Alarms rating system). And as we reckon a few more people need to know about this excellent 4 Star contender we’re offering the AVS S4 alarm installed for $499* for a limited time. Give us a call on 0800 10 10 81.
