ABTEC dB Drag Soundoff & Sounds Alive 2012 October Update

Last Saturday on the 13th of October ABTEC had yet another dB Drag Sound-off Event at its Lower Hutt Workshop. Due to the weather I did expect the turn-out to be on the lower side of things but was quite pleasantly surprised when it hit 2pm that the workshop started to fill up very quickly.

With the Sound-Off being held on a Saturday instead of the usual Sunday, setting up the dB Drag Trailer and Workshop was a little more chaotic then usual due to the Workshop being open till the Sound-off started.

Soon after 2pm most of the competitors had turned up and I’m sure you could hear the bass cranking out of the cars from close to a mile away!

Now it was time to start bringing in the cars and SPL (Sound Pressure Level) testing them! There was some impressive results and a few new personal bests too which is always good to see! I myself with my new car and setup got a new Personal Best of 153.56dB with four Entry level Digital Designs 12″ Sub-woofers and I am still having slight power issues and will be addressing this before the next ABTEC dB Drag Sound-off on Saturday the 8th of December.

After we ran the SPL ‘Burp’ test’s it was time for everyone to compete in the NEW dB Drag Class ‘SOUNDS ALIVE’ . This time round it was a different song than last time and as we use a different song every time and no-one knows what the song is till the day making it fair so no car is tuned for the song.

Ashley ‘MAD BASS’ Burrell wouldn’t even tell me what the song was till the day and I can tell you I was asking him everyday up to the event, even to the point of annoying the hell out of him hoping he would give in. For the next event we will be using a very Bass-Heavy song for the ‘SOUNDS ALIVE’ Class since its going to be the last event for 2012!

The car that really impressed me on the day this time round was Dave’s Holden Commodore wagon that hit a very respectable 145.66dB on ‘Burps’ and a 144.80dB on the ‘SOUNDS ALIVE’ track. What is really impressive with Dave’s setup is how low the bass hits, in fact it hits so low that I think the hum that everyone in Wellington has been complaining about is actually the bass coming from Dave’s car!

Yet again I will finish this off by thanking Everybody that turned up to either compete, watch or even just to drop by to say Hi! The surrounding businesses in our area for putting up with the few hours of noise, Johnny for supplying the Ma Moe for the BBQ, Darryl for manning the most fiery BBQ I’ve seen in quite some time, the rest of ABTEC Team for doing there thing and last but not least Ashley for allowing this event to happen yet again!
