{"id":2579,"date":"2012-11-02T14:39:25","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T01:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/?p=2579"},"modified":"2015-06-27T13:09:14","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T01:09:14","slug":"digital-designs-dd-512-d4-subwoofers-hit-153-7db","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/digital-designs-dd-512-d4-subwoofers-hit-153-7db\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Designs DD-512-D4 Subwoofers Hit 153.7dB!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to <strong>SPL (Sound Pressure Level)<\/strong>\u00a0results, anything over the <strong>150dB<\/strong> mark is a\u00a0phenomenal\u00a0result no matter how you look at it and getting a result above <strong>150dB<\/strong> requires a lot of time, testing and in some cases money. In most cases people go out and buy high-end Sub-Woofers designed for<strong> SPL<\/strong> that usually net good results but come at a high cost to your pocket! We at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">ABTEC<\/a><\/strong> set a little challenge to ourselves, this challenge was to prove that you can get results over the <strong>150dB<\/strong> mark with <strong>Entry-Level Sub-Woofers!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/153.7.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-2590\" title=\"153.7\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/153.7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It took a lot of testing with different box designs but once we found one that worked we decided to run with it, we could of carried on testing more designs but in the end of the day that would of just been a waste of time money and resources and as the saying goes <strong>&#8220;Keep it simple stupid&#8221;<\/strong>. As we found out the simpler designs seemed to net the better results and at minimal cost too!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2592\" title=\"DD512_1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ok, so with the same box design we have tested three different <strong>Entry Level Sub-Woofers<\/strong>. First was the <strong>Sony Entry Level 10&#8243; Sub-Woofers<\/strong>, second was the <strong>JBL Entry Level 12&#8243; Sub-Woofers<\/strong> and this time round we tested the <strong>Digital Designs Entry Level <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/DD_512_D4\" target=\"_blank\">DD-512-D4<\/a> 12&#8243; Sub-Woofers<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2593\" title=\"DD512_2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I started the test by going around <strong>ABTEC3<\/strong> making sure I do my usual check-list and setting up the seat\/visor placements and removing all the unnecessary things from the cabin that would interfere with the airflow or damage the little <strong>Toyota Vitz<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Next was to set-up the two <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/DD_M4a_Discontinued_2014_2015_\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Designs M4a&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> and head-unit as I drive\u00a0<strong>ABTEC3<\/strong> on a daily basis now and it has different set-up for daily use. \u00a0It usually has a <strong>Digital Designs 9518sc 18&#8243;<\/strong> in it for daily duties running off one of the <strong>M4a&#8217;s<\/strong> and as much as I could easily go on about the <strong>DD-9518-D2<\/strong> I will leave that for another write up!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2594\" title=\"DD512_3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that <strong>ABTEC3<\/strong> was fully set-up and ready it was time to do a low volume sweep, check the peak Fq (Frequency)\u00a0and double check just in case we can net a better result (At low volume of course) at a higher or lower Fq. Doing so showed us that <strong>58Hz<\/strong> was getting the the best result for us and now it was time to &#8216;Burp&#8217; it at high volume!<\/p>\n<p>So I reset &amp; restarted the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/Term_LAB_Magnum_2_Sensor_System\" target=\"_blank\">Term-Lab<\/a><\/strong> and grabbed the remote control steadying myself for the outcome in\u00a0anticipation\u00a0and to my surprise got an\u00a0astonishing\u00a0<strong>153.7dB<\/strong>! I already knew this set-up would do <strong>150dB+<\/strong> all day everyday but to do a <strong>153.7dB<\/strong> on testing with only half of the batteries that I would usually use was mind blowing. Yet alone doing a <strong>153.7dB<\/strong> on four <strong>DD-512-D4&#8217;s<\/strong> which tells me these <strong>Entry Level Sub-Woofers<\/strong> have an amazing build quality to put out these kind of numbers and handle the power of two <strong>M4a&#8217;s<\/strong> per pair!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2595\" title=\"DD512_4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/abtec.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/DD512_4-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not only can this set-up get these\u00a0phenomenal numbers but I also drove around for the next week playing music on them too and in my honest opinion they sounded pretty mint too, keeping in mind I am kind of spoilt when it comes to <strong>Sub-Woofers<\/strong> since I usually get to run <strong>9500<\/strong> or <strong>Z Series<\/strong> on a daily basis!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d like to end this by saying there are still a few bugs in this system that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abtec.co.nz\/thirty-years.php\" target=\"_blank\">Ashley &#8216;MAD BASS&#8217; Burrell<\/a><\/strong> and I are working on and hopefully will have sorted by the end of the year as I feel it has the potential for bigger and better results! I am not going to throw out any numbers but will say to keep an eye on this as I feel these little <strong>Sub-Woofers<\/strong> might surprise a few people in the near future!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d also like to thank everyone at <strong>ABTEC<\/strong> for allowing me the time to set-up and test our little <strong>Toyota Vitz<\/strong> that is <strong>ABTEC3<\/strong>, <strong>Ashley<\/strong> for all the time spent talking about the set-up and giving me tips and advise along the way.
