Back on the 12th of May not only did we manage a 150.1dB with the 4 entry level 10″ Sony Xplod’s in the Toyota Vitz but we also managed to get 152.3dB with the same set-up apart from the 4 entry level JBL 12″ sub-woofers.
We have also managed a a 150.5dB in the Mitsubishi Pajero with these same 4 JBL 12″s but with a more powerful amplifier which proves to myself that the Toyota Vitz is a much better base for a SPL car. If you look at it from a different angle the the Toyota Vitz has half the air space than any other vehicle in the ABTEC fleet so if you think about that alone even before talking about any audio equipment it makes sense to use the smallest vehicle at your disposal.
This blog isn’t so much on how we got 152.3dB in the Vitz, its more about the evolution of the set-ups that have been tested in it and where it will be going in the future.
The little Toyota Vitz started its life in TEAM ABTEC as a daily/work car with a Digital Designs DD-LE308 8″ Sub enclosure in it which isn’t exactly made for SPL but they do produce amazing SQ (Sound Quality) and can out do a lot of larger sub-woofers if driven with the right amp! As soon as we decided that the Vitz was going to be an SPL car out came the little DD-LE308 and off to the drawing board it went for box designs!
After testing 4 10″ subs, 4 12″ subs and 2 15″ subs in various box designs we have found a working formula for the car and will be testing it at the ABTEC dB Drag Sound Off Sunday June 3rd 2012.
This set-up consists of :
- 1 x Pioneer AVH-P8450BT Head-unit
- 2 x Digital Designs M4a Amplifiers
- 1 x Digital Designs DD-Z18-1.5
- 4 x Century Batteries
We all have big hopes for this set-up and how the amp’s are mounted is very unusual but the cage has helped with this a lot… I am not however going to guess the numbers it will produce and leave that for the day. I will however will say in no way in hell will I be sitting in it while it is being run!
Feel free to drop in on Sunday while we burp the DD-Z18, watch everyone compete, compete yourself or just swing by to say hi!
