Being the middle of the year it was time for yet another ABTEC dB Drag Soundoff & Sounds Alive Winter Event, this time round it was at our NEW Shop in Petone making it a far better site for parking but also having enough room to move around in the workshop while the event was running.
Yet again the regular competitors have been stepping up their game with some very impressive upgrade’s and even some of newer people in the scene have been fully rebuilding with almost everybody beating their own personal bests!
As we all started to setup it was starting to look like it was going to be a small event due to the typical Wellington winter weather, but soon enough people were turning up one by one and to my surprise it ended up being one of the biggest Sound Offs NZ has had this year with 25 competitors! This might not seem like much but NZ is a small country and on average competitions here in NZ have 12-16 competitors.
After a good hour of everybody checking out the competitors cars we finally got the Sound Off started and as we always do we started with the Kiwi Classes, this way we can get the battery draining burps out of the way before everybody demos their batteries away!
The Kiwi Class Results were very impressive with lowest being a 120dB out of 2 200w RMS SVC 8″ Sub-Woofers in a Commodore sedan and the highest result being a monstrous 156.4dB out of 2 18″ Sub-Woofers in a walled Pajero! I would also like to congratulate Johnny, David & Jason for entering the 150+dB Club with some epic results!
Next up was my favourite class, the ‘Sounds Alive’ (Music) Class! The of choice song for the day was Brutal by Excision, which has bass frequency range from 60Hz down to 38Hz which accommodates for most peoples setups but unfortunately wasn’t ideal for Wellington Ground Pounder Dave yet he still got the best result of 148.5dB for the class!
After the competition was finished and all the dB Drag gear was all packed away a few of us relaxed while waiting on our certificates to be written up by watching a few Animusic tracks in The Abtec Audio Lounge. Soon after a small group of us competitors headed into town and demoed our cars in which has become a bit of a tradition for a few of us after the Abtec dB Drag Competitions.
Now for the results of the day.

As usual I’d like to end this update by thanking all the competitors in dB Drag since if it wasn’t for all of you we wouldn’t have a competition, Ashley ‘MAD BASS’ Burrell for the continuing support in dB Drag and for all the time & effort organising event’s at your own cost yet again. Darryl for manning the BBQ at the event held at our NEW workshop, Shane, Dave & Johnny for helping out and Yvonne for jolting down the results at the event & doing the paper work. Also a massive thank you to all the friends, customers, neighbours & local businesses that have either put up with or joined in with all the excessive noise and chaos at the ABTEC dB Drag Sound Off’s!
